Over a year ago the Minneapolis, St. Paul and St. Sault Ste. Marie Road tried the plan of allowing each locomotive engineer to hire his own firemen. The plan has worked so well that the managers of the road now propose to let each conductor hire bis own brakeman. ( Hher roads, iucluding some of the most inipor tant in the country, have been watch ing the plan with great interest and its general adoption is under dis cussion. Hon. John Young Brown, ex Governor and ex-Congressman, at the request of several thousand voters has consented to accept the Democratic notniifttion for Congress in the Louisville (Ky .) district on a free silver platform. Mr. Krown served with distinction in the na tional House of Representatives before the war . At his first elec tion he was under the constitutional age and had to wait several months before he could swear in as a mem ber. Gilmer county, VV. Wa., voted Saturday on the proposition sub mitted by the county court to issue bonds to the amount of $50,000 for the building of the Little Kanawha Valley Railroad. The proposition carried by a large majority, fourth fifths of the votes cast being in favor of the issuing of the bonds. The pro(Ksed road would penetrate a splendid agricultural, mineral and Aimber section and would prove an important factor in the development of the State. The Pacific coast papers are pro fuse in praise of the heroism of a seventeen-year-old boy named Ia Porte, of Albany, Oregon, who re cently plunged into the Columbia river and rescued two young wo men from drowning. He deserves to rank with the heroes of the age. The drowning girls grappled the boy when he sprang, full clothed, Into the swift current to save them, and the trio went to the bottom. After once rising he realized that he could not swim to shone with his Clinging burdens and sank witli them and crawled upon the bottom 4o shallow drag ,.hjr water, from which he (.hjmself and his charges more dead than alive. Secretary Herbert is still unde cided concerning the christening of he three new battleships. Those States already represented in the '..names of the huge war ships of this fffi are Texas. Maine, Indiana, ? Massachusetts. Oregon, Iowa and Kentucky, the remaining battleship being named Kearsarge, after t In famous wreck of the Roneador. There can be little question of the jtle of Pennsylvania, the great shipbuilding commonwealth of the nation, to be godmother to one of the 'hree.-new men-of-war. Secretary , erbert has expressed a desire to christen one of them after his adopt ed State, Alabama. 4 As for the ' third, he might get a hint by exam ining the original naval roll call of tjhe Union. The States of Delaware and Virginia were represented in the Revolutionary ' fleet;' - and . the name of either --would be worthy title for the third battleship,' .. .tfEZEED Money Saved IS Money Made. Below are some interesting state ments by representative citizens of Raleigh of money saved by them by insuring in the Southern Stock Mu tual Insurance Company of Greens boro, N. C: Raleieh. N. C, March 10, 1896 On the 14th day of March, 1895, we took out a policy in the Southern Stock Mutual Insurance Company of Greensboro, N. C, and paid the com pany 116.50 and received a return of 20 per cent, dividend, amounting to $3.30, making total cost of insurance but $13.20. Same insurance in other companies cost $16.50. For further information call on c. c. Mcdonald. Agt. Greensboro. N. April 1. '96 Lawt year we paid the Southern Stock Mutual Insurance Company $184.50 for tire insurance. We have received notice of dividends to our credit of $12. .'10. Our policies are for three vears, and if our dividends for the next two years are no less than they were for 1895 (as we have every reason to expect ) flie total saving in the cost of our insurance will beKlti.iM), or 20 per cent of the amount paid. Signed I J. S. Bell. NOTK If you are a policy-holder of the Southern Stock Mutual Insur ance Company, or if you expect to lie, you are interested in the profits of the company. The larger the number of select risks the company can secure, the larger the protit to policy-holders. Therefore, if your neighbor has good property to insure, tell of the advan tages of insuring in the Southrrn Stock Mutual Insurance Company. Hand this statement to some reliable property-owner who is not a policy holder. N. B. When competitors criticise, remember that they are competitors, and that we are taking business from them. The 20 jier cent, return to policy holders for 1890 was made on the first year's operations, in spite of the com bined opposition and hostility of com peting companies and their agents, and in the faceof more serious diftcul ties than the Company will ever en counter again, and it may be counted upon with reasonable certainty that the profit to policy holders wilfnever be less than it was last year. This is the only company doing business in North Carolina whose policy holders participate in the profits and at the same time assume ho liability to assesement. Save money by insuring your prop erty in the Southern Stock-Mutual In surance Company. OFFICERS. J M Worth, President; E P Whar ton, Vice-President; AW McAlister, Sec. and Treas.
